Saluki Walk 2008

The Saluki Walk on 27th September at Earby in aid of th SWF organised by David Hartley proved to be a great success with 40 people and over 30 dogs attending.

The change of date forced by a clash with certain shows proved to be advantageous as the weather was very much better than on the original date and participants enjoyed a sunny autumnal day. The walk was a little more challenging than previously but afforded wonderful views over the surrounding countryside which were greatly appreciated by the owners.

After lunch entries were taken for fun classes and a photograph competition. Many of the photos entered were stunning and most showed Salukis in one of two different ‘flat out modes’ – on the sofa or running .

Cobbydog and Royal Canin generously sponsored the well supported classes and the exhibitors accepted the placings of the judges (whose names were drawn from a hat) with good humour. Cards from First to Very Highly Commended and rosettes for the first three places generously donated by Roy Goodby meant that few went home empty handed. Class winners each received a bag of Royal Canin food, second and thirds received a bag of Cobbydog, and the Best in Show received a large sack of Cobbydog.

Seventeen donated raffle prizes were drawn afterwards and the prizes well distributed among those present.

After a small presentation to members of St Peter’s church for their help in organising the event, there followed a fish and chip tea from the Quality Fish Bar which lived up to its name. Not only did those present enjoy the meal but so too did David’s skunks, kinkajous, mongooses and coatis who ate the leftovers the following day.

Thanks are due to David and the members of St Peter’s Church for organising and hosting the event and to all of those who supported it in any way.

David hopes to organise another event in Earby in 2009 and hopes to see even more people attend. The walk raised £469 for the Saluki Welfare Fund.
